Progress Openedge
Considering all the languages and databases in the public domain, it is still quite surprising that there have been no serious contenders to the Progress development toolset. Progress Software was one of the early adopters of the 4GL with a robust and scaleable relational database. There are many free languages and databases out in the market, but when your enterprise depends on getting it right first time, and knowing the database can perform and safeguard your data, the choices reduce massively.
Software as a Service
The browser is becoming the deFacto standard for applications and service delivery. No software to install, ease of upgrades and utility computing is want businesses want. Delivering domain expertise to a vertical market, with applications that can be delivered over the Internet allows greater flexibility, and convenience.
Progress - the best kept secret
Have a look on www.progress.com and see how many applications are written in Progress, but another surprising fact is the number of bespoke applications that have been developed over the years. Why? Progress software allows RAD techniques to be used to build a full blown application in a fraction of the time it would take in a 3GL such as PHP. Ok, there are frameworks that can write code, but look closer and you will see they write very simple programs, which to be honest any programming language can do. Now develop a serious business application that requires multi-user updates and complex logic, and you will see the differences emerging quite rapidly.
